Un fin de semana larga
Written by Brian David Crane on August 17th, 2005
My birthday celebration(s) are officially over as of last night. A quick run-down on the run-down of what went down as we had a three-day weekend in Arg. to celebrate “Child’s Day” (El Dia Del Nino) y Gen. San Martin’s death or birth (I am not sure which).Friday night, I went over to Geli’s apartment where Ernesto, Euge, y various other friends were gathered. Nothing spectacular to report - I just want to mention that Ernesto and I sang in front of everyone about 20 songs or so. He can play the guitar very very well and has a book with probably the 500 best known songs from the U.S. and Germany (needless to say, I didn’t sing with him on the German ones). I really enjoyed singing and the experience as a whole only strengthened my desire to learn to play the guitar. On Sat. night, I watched The Life of David Gale. It was a lot better than I had expected. Be forewarned that it is staunchly anti-death penalty and fairly graffic in some parts. On Sun. night, we celebrated Geli’s birthday in her apartment (she turned 23 one day before I did). There was a lot of dancing to cuarteto (a musical style from Cba) as we ate empanadas and cake. At 12:01, everyone sang Happy B-day to me. At about 3 or so in the morning, we left for a milonga (a tango party) close to my house where we danced until 7 in the morning (!). It was a great night. On Mon., I slept the majority of the day to celebrate my birthday. Later, I went to eat at a tenedor libre restaurant (i.e. buffet, all you can eat) where you can eat for free for your birthday with Euge, her sister, and Geli (she got to eat for free too). Afterwards, I met up with Mirta, a woman I had met the night before at the milonga. Last night, the few remaining intercambios from the last semester came over to my house to celebrate my birthday with empanadas and lemon pie (thanks Frank!). Those who came were Elias, Andreas, Jonas, Katy, Frank, Jasmin, Euge, Geli, Niko, Niko’s g-friend Sabrina, Carlos, and Luz. Everyone (including myself) had a good time even though Geli & I ended the night fighting about some computer speakers…As for today, I had my first class of the new semester in La Catolica (Spanish III). I am not sure I want to continue taking the class as I could spend the 500 pesos (the cost of the class) on private lessons and probably learn a whole lot more. We will see as I haven’t paid yet. Yesterday, I had my first Painting class in La Ciudad de los Artes. It was a totally different experience. Everyone talks throughout the whole class and kisses everyone else when they enter the room (25 students - imagine that) - the prof. is more or less a referee who shows up 30 minutes late and sits at the front of the room half-asleep. It was very entertaining. As for the jobs, I worked the language table on Sat. afternoon fairly successfully but, as I had suspected, it was a one-time gig. As for another of the jobs I mentioned, I am going to be teaching english from 8 to 10 at night M-Th in an American English school for the next three months. We will see how that goes - I will get a certificate at the end, though, that will semi-certify me to teach in other language schools (the lack of a certificate was a bit of a problem). I will also be teaching only 3 or 4 advanced level people (as opposed to classes of 15 people at the beginner level). As I said, we will see how it goes.

I still think this birthday could not compare to the ones you had at home. Every party needs pointed birthday hats and cupcakes….bet you didn’t have that!
