  • St. Patty’s Day in NYC

Written by Brian David Crane on March 20th, 2006

An international shipping company which I interviewed with in Knoxville called APL flew me up for a second interview to their corporate offices outside of New York City on Friday. The interview went well (in comparison to the first interview, it went really well). Both of the people I interviewed with were friendly and APL treated me fantastically - direct round trip flight between Knoxville and New York City (I did not miss this flight but almost missed the return flight into Knoxville paid transportation from the airport to their offices and then from their offices into Manhattan where my UT friend Nick was waiting for me, and the flexibility to schedule my return flight for Saturday so that I could spend Friday night in NYC celebrating St. Patty’s Day.What a crazy place NYC is (especially on St. Patty’s Day)! I spent Spring Break in NYC four years ago on a UT trip and saw the majority of the tourist spots during that week but the city is such a fast-paced place that it is easy to forget the speed of things there unless you are in the middle of it. Nick was a great host - he let me stay with him at his place in Midtown - and he filled my head with all sorts of travel ideas. After leaving work over at Morgan Stanley on Friday night, we talked and he told me about a month-long summer trip UT runs for students who want to teach English in Beijing, China. He participated in the program last summer. The program sounded great and, as soon as I got back yesterday, I contacted the coordinator to find out if I could participate but the deadline had already passed so that was a non-starter (but what a great trip it would have been)…In addition to hanging out with Nick, catching a bit of the St. Patty’s Day Parade, and drinking a few Guinness to celebrate the occasion, I had lunch on Saturday afternoon with Matt Dukes (my mom is a friend of his dad). 25-year-old Matt is working for Deutsch Bank in their Bond Division covering Latin America; we got along really well talking about Latin American politics, our backgrounds and our respective travels through the area.It was a great two days - the interview went well, Nick took me under his wing, showed me around the city a bit and also introduced me to some of his friends, and Matt and I hit it off.
