Six Flags Over Georgia
Written by Brian David Crane on April 25th, 2006
On Sunday, I got up early and went down to Atlanta to visit the theme park Six Flags Over Georgia with Roberto’s two cousins who are visiting from Buenos Aires, Carolina & Cecilia, Marcelo, Roberto (both of whom are also from Argentina and Roberto’s newest amiga Natasha (from Russia). Of course, we rolled in the 1987 Buick Century as it is the BEST road trip car ever invented (and it was the only one that could hold all six of us). The Buick performed mighty well and we spent a beautiful day riding all sorts of roller coasters and talking (primarily) in Spanish. I had never been to Six Flags and had forgotten how much I like roller coasters. A couple of the best roller coasters were Superman in which you are strapped into a seat that raises you up so that you are “flying” and Deja Vu which has two peaks that shoot you down both frontwards and backwards at something like 80 MPH. We were the last to ride Deja Vu in the whole park and Marcelo and I got to sit up front at which point we are something like 200+ feet off the ground looking straight down about to go 80 MPH and he tells me “saltá las manos!!” i.e. take your hands off and just lay against the harness…to put it mildly I was scared…overall, some of the best roller coasters I have been on. As for other highlights of the day, Roberto and his cousins prepared some sandwiches and drinks which we ate out in the parking lot at Six Flags that night like true Argentinians w/shared bottles of coca-cola, crackers, tomatoes, and some other stuff. It is hard to explain here but with the food and the conversation I felt like I was back in Argentina. Overall, it was a great day and I am happy I went as I had planned to stay at home and work. Two quick observations: Theme parks cut across social and economic divides like nothing else - what a mixture of people there was at Six Flags - everyone likes roller coasters & a theme park would be a great place for like a 3rd or 4th date with someone as you spend 90% of the time standing around talking and waiting…after a day at a theme park w/that special someone, you are going TO KNOW if you have much in common with the person or not.
