  • “Severly Dislocated Toe”

Last night, UT International was playing in an indoor tournament here in Maryville. At the end of our second game, we were losing 1-0 to a group of Maryville College players when I collided with one of the players near the center of the court as we were both chasing the ball. The ball shot up and I am not sure if he kicked me, I kicked him, or the ball was in the middle of our collision but pain shot thru my foot and, as soon as I got off the floor, I pulled my shoe and sock off to discover that my big toe was pointing due east. Luckily, my parents and sister were at the game and Blount Memorial Hospital is only about 5 minutes from Maryville College. We went to the Emergency Room and, two hours, two shots, a roll of bandage tape, and six x-rays later, I was rolled out of the hospital in a wheelchair with my big right toe (more or less) back in place. I was extremely fortunate that my parents were at the game, that the game was in Maryville, that it was a Friday night and no one was at the ER, and that my toe wasn’t broken (the original diagnosis was that it was broken in two places). The X-Ray Tech had the best line of the night: “I have never seen a toe at that angle…” Mom offered lots of “does it hurt?” lines and the doctor, after injecting me around the toe, pulled it out like you would a door that is stuck and snapped it back into place. All in all, I am very thankful that it wasn’t broken (how can I pick up cartridges if I can’t walk?!?!?!) and that it was so quick and easy to get medical attention (there really ARE benefits to being close to home!).
