Miami With Roberto
Written by Brian David Crane on September 25th, 2006
Just got back from Miami this weekend with Roberto. I used my US Air frequent flyer miles to make the trip and, on the way back, got bumped to a later flight because of overbooking on the flight and picked up a voucher for a free flight within the U.S. Cool. In the meantime, a few notes and thoughts about the weekend:First, I give Roberto a lot of credit for what he is doing. Can’t be easy moving to a new city without many close contacts to start a new job in a place as competitive as Miami. As for the city, on the plus side I felt like I was back in South America. Latinos EVERYWHERE. Supposedly there are something like 20,000 Argentinians living in the city; just a guess but I would say there are at least 5 times that number of Cubans. People greet you in Spanish (I guess they assume that if you are in some of the places we were this weekend, you better know some Spanish). Great food, nice weather, and warm water at the beach. Immigrants - and beautiful people - everywhere…and the two aren’t mutually exclusive. On the downside, life in Miami is all about la plata o el dinero. If you don’t have money (or can’t at least pretend like you do just stay home because Miami isn’t the city for you. Good thing I didn’t drive my 1987 Buick Century down there…
