  • Mexico - Day 4

So after Satuday night’s concert, I get up early on Sunday morning and pack my bags for the 5 hour bus ride to Acapulco where some American friends of mine are staying. Before leaving Mexico City, though, I had one last great experience. Background:On Friday, I was talking to Fabiola, a Mexican girl who works in the hostel as the tour director. I invited her to go with me to a soccer match on Saturday between Chivas and Pumas. Chivas is THE most popular team in Mexico and Pumas is one of the three big teams from Mexico City.Sunday:Fabiola met me at the hostel and we first went to the bus station to drop my bag off before going over to the stadium. She had brought me a Pumas hat and was wearing a Pumas jersey herself so I - by default - became a Pumas fan. :-)The stadium was pretty full and the game and the crowd was everything that was to be expected in Latin America. The crowd chanted, whistled, and cheered during the whole game. One of my favorites was this chant:

Como no te voy a quererComo no te voy a quererSi mi corazon es azulY mi piel es doradaComo no te voy a querer

The translation is basically how are you not going to love me when my heart is blue and my skin is gold (the colors from Pumas).Fabiola and I drank Coronas and got sun-burned (at least I did). We left the stadium following some guys with drums chanting and clapping as Chivas (which is considered a better team than Pumas) played terrible and tied 0-0 with Pumas. Based on their enthusiasm after the game, the Pumas fans thought this was a pretty good result. Afterwards, before my bus left, we went to one of what has to be thousands of great little Mexican taco stands. She ordered for me (thereby making the food extra spicy); it was delicious. She also showed me around the barrio between the stadium and the bus station as I think she is a natural tour guide. It was the perfect way to leave Mexico City - a great experience speaking Spanish with a Mexican at a soccer match…as I prepared to head to Acapulco where I will be surrounded by Americans speaking English who probably won’t have much interest in the city outside of the hotel zone…Regardless, it has been a whirlwind couple of days in Mexico that I absolutely loved!
