  • Job Interviews

Written by Brian David Crane on February 10th, 2006

It is snowing for the first time in Knoxville in a long time. That makes 3 winters in a row for me - hurray? no.This week I had two different job interviews with companies that handle international shipping and trade. One was with APL Logistics, which is based in Oakland, California. The interview didn’t go as well as I had hoped but then again I wasn’t ready for some of the questions they asked me about group conflict-resolution skills. A UT friend of mine, Ben Trotter, used to work for the same company and, although he is no longer with them, I think he had a positive experience (at least I know he loved living in the Bay Area). The second company was Maersk, which is the largest container shipping company in the world and is based out of Copenhagen, Denmark. I was interviewing for the MISE program and, in comparison to the first interview, this one went a bit better as I was a bit more mentally prepared (even though I don’t like some of the answers I gave to questions such as “if you could change one characteristic about your behavior, what would it be” and I responded that “I am not assertive enough” - patently false…if anything, I am OVER-assertive). We shall see what, if anything, comes of these interviews. The MISE program is really cool, though; you are assigned to a foreign office anywhere in the world for 2 years after completion of the program. It is highly-highly competitive, however, as they had 80,000 applicants last year and only chose 300 people. On Sat. night, I went to MaiTe’s house for a Spanish dinner (she is the Spanish girl who is starting an import/export business here in Knoxville). We did a bit of dancing and ate some delicious paella while hanging out with about 12 people who were from Spain, Ecuador, Venezuela, & Argentina.
