What a crazy state Texas is. Thanks again to Travis for his unflailing hospitality (no matter what I borrowed or used). Wednesday thru Monday, Travis and I saw all the sights, sounds, and other assorted novelties Austin & Houston have to offer. In Austin, there was the Super 8, Cesar, the Hilton, bicycles w/o helmets (and television interviews about them mexican martinis, eye-catching hair models from small West Texas towns who say beautiful things like “iiice cream”, lost keys, Israeli locksmiths, collapsing overhangs & stuck windows, forgotten room numbers, Irish pubs filled with soccer fans on 4th street, lost credit cards, purposely-built giant capital buildings, the big University of Texas campus, and a general feeling that, indeed, Austin is “weird” and should stay that way. What a fun town (and a place I would definently live in).As for Houston, there was - first-and-foremost - the humidity, the overwhelming size of the city, Travis’s great place downtown, birthday parties, nose rings, “Sweet Caroline”, eating the last piece of pizza, speaking Spanish, Wish in an area of Houston called Montrose, the Astros, walking into the wrong bathroom, trying to understand how a gorgeous women ends up with an intoxicated deodorant-shirt-stained boludo, Red Door, speaking Spanish (did I already mention that? the enchanting “mamasita”, old card games that we used to be good at, destroyed bathrooms & toothbrushes in the hair, pool-side talks, tapas dinners, clubs full of Asians, rain rain & more rain, maps of Houston, and almost-missed flights. I loved Houston’s cultural diversity but not the size.It was a great time - God Bless Texas.
