  • Driving in Naples

Written by Brian David Crane on April 26th, 2007

Leaving Siena in a rental car on the Crane Italy family trip, I drove as we headed down to Naples where we would take a ferry out to the Italian island of Capri. The drive was fast - 108 mph or 180 km p/hr fast - and took us about 5 hours to get to the outskirts of Naples. That is where the fun started.Driving in Naples can only be described as bumper cars on a larger scale. The car is treated as simply an extention of your body so you do what you normally would do with your body when you are in line: You make space for yourself. Red lights, stop signs, and trolley lanes couldn’t even be considered suggestions in Naples as no one even acts as if they are paying attention to any sort of traffic signal. No police. No helmets on the moped drivers. You simply go with the flow of traffic and hope it takes you where you want to go. As a passenger, my mom was totally nerve-wracked. As a driver, I thought it was pretty fun. There were no accidents (although there were lots of close calls including one with a bus and a red light that made me really nervous). Now I know where Argentinians learned to drive.
