Capri & Amalfi Coast, Italy
Written by Brian David Crane on April 29th, 2007
Capri is one of the most beautiful islands I have ever been on. Popular in the 1960s & 1970s with the Hollywood crowd, it is now still as glamorous but not as frequented by as many glamorous people. Capri - pronounced like it rhymes with cat pee - has two tiny cities: Anicapri & Capri. We stayed in Capri based on the recommendations of my mom’s friend, Linda, whose grandmother is from the island. This proved to be a wise choice as Capri is quite a bit nicer and much more centrally located on the island. As a family, I think we had the best time in Capri. The food was excellent, our hotel was really well located, and you felt like you were on vacation rather than just traveling (if that makes sense). The Italian sense of style was on full display at Capri. You felt like a celebrity and the surroundings made it all the more real.We went on a boat ride around the island to see some of the world famous grottos (such as the Blue Grotto) that surround Capri. The boat ride was excellent to begin with as the scenery was, in the words of my mom, “better than Hawaii”; however, what really made the trip memorable was our old sea captain who told some pretty funny stories about a range of Italian topics. After leaving Capri, we took a ferry from the island to Sorrento and from there a bus ride along the Amalfi Coast to Salerno where we caught a train back to Rome. The Amalfi Coast is really beautiful as well. A tiny road hugging cliffs some 1000 to 1500 feet above the ocean (with towns interspersed along these same cliffs) made for some pretty dramatic views. We had lunch in Positano at an old Italian man’s house overlooking the sea with a bottle of wine we brought from Capri. Traveling from Capri back to Rome along the Amalfi Coast took a long time, however, the scenery that the Amalfi Coast offers was worth every minute of it.The time we spent in Capri and driving along the Amalfi Coast was my favorite part of the Crane Italy trip. While Rome is historic and Tuscany is beautiful, Capri and the Amalfi Coast are luxurious. You feel like a celebrity in Capri and, while driving along the Amalfi Coast, you can understand why Italians (and the rest of the world) love Italy so much.
