I came across an interesting article full of statistics that jives with what I have seen throughout Argentina:

Politicians and legislators have sadly not been active in the protection of trademarks in Argentina. Pirated software has even been found in many governmental agencies and most probably do not hesitate to buy these fakes from illegal street vendors. It is not surprising then that pirated software accounts for 75 percent of the entire of software in Argentina.

The aforementioned illegal street vendors are all over the place. Want the new Shakira CD? 5 Pesos (less than $2.00 for the CD, case, and photocopies of the front & back covers). Want a new Hollywood movie? 10 Pesos with the same setup (CD, case, and copies). On a personal note, I am a huge hypocrite for a number of reasons writing about this topic. As I write this I am downloading music via Ares. I have also bought some of these CDs while in BsAs (a video game that sells for $400 for about $25).I guess the question that needs to be asked is whether America (or myself specifically) is better off because we pirate our music behind closed doors?
