America - La Seria

Check out this article about a Brasilian soap opera characterizing the lives of some illegal Brasilian immigrants in the U.S. I saw this show when I was in Brasil - it was nuts, almost half of the population seemed to stop at 8 PM to watch every night of the week. As for the point of view, it is critical of the U.S. immigration system (which needs a massive overhaul i.e. many many more visas and naturalized citizens admitted per year as well as some sort of barrier along the Mex/U.S. border). One question though, if these Brasilians are paying $9,000 to get to the U.S. border via a coyote and they are living on a couple hundred dollars per month, why don`t they start a business or invest in Brasil? Is the draw of the U.S. so high or is Brasil`s infrastructure so bad that someone would work 5-10 years to amass the money only to TRY and enter the U.S. instead of investing the same amount of money in their mother country?
